In 1990, Michael Shaps moves from the US to Beane to study viticulture and work. In 1995, he moved to Charlotte and worked as winemaker at Jefferson Vineyards for six vintages. He produced his first wines under his own label in 2000, and in 2004 won his first coveted Virginia’s Governor’s Cup for his 2002 Cabernet Franc. In 2019, three of his wins are Governor’s Cup winners! I shared the 2015 Tannat in my July Forbes article - Fourth of July Wines From Emerging US Wine Regions. Today, I’m sharing two more. The 2016 Petit Manseng has a touch of skin contact, resulting in bright fruit, a rich texture, and heavy structure with racy acidity throughout. The 2016 Raisin D’Etre sweet wine is crafted of 73% Petit Manseng and 27% Roussanne. This late-Harvest wine offers dried figs and apricots with honey comb, white flowers, a touch of nuttiness. The 7% residual sugar is well-balanced with high acidity and a roundness from French oak aging.
