Where is a Pinot Noir not noble? In Alsace, only 4 noble grape varieties are permitted to be labeled Grand Cru. Pinot Noir is not one of them. However, many producers craft grand cru quality Pinot Noirs from grapes grown in grand cru vineyards. For example, this 2015 Joseph Cattin Pinot Noir Grand Cru Steinbach is outstanding. It has notes of dark berries, spice, black tea, and graphite. It’s round on the palate with medium+ tannins and acidity and a long finish. Have you explored Alsace Pinot Noir?
